Cino Cinelli and Family

This image from a 1939 publication comes courtesy of Dave Beck. The lower photo, taken in 1917, shows Cino Cinelli in the arms of his mother. Cino's older brother, Giotto Cinelli, is in the middle next to their grandmother. All the Cinelli siblings are named.

The article also mentions that Giotto Cinelli owned a plastics factory at the time.

Cinelli Laser Fanini

A very interesting 1983 Fanini "Record", serial number 20, made by Cinelli presumably. I asked the owner, Stefan of speedbicycles.ch, and he said "As far as I know it is Laser with a special Fanini finish." It does appear very similar to the Cinelli Laser pictured here that was on a display.

If anyone has more information about the Cinelli-Fanini tie-in please write in.

Celebrating Cino Cinelli's Birthday

Cino Cinelli was born on this date in 1916. Reader Chris write's today of riding his Cinelli Super Corsa Leggerissimo:

"Now I Understand.

For many years I have admired the Cinelli Speciale Corsa. The lines and eometry have always seemed right to me, and the few brief rides that I had on SCs belonging to friends made me want one.

After finding and restoring my own, I have begun riding it. So far the miles have confirmed and expanded my view that these bicycles are something very special.

I now understand why the same basic frame has been in production for over 50 years. This frame was not designed with a computer, probably not even a slide rule.

It was designed by a man who was a cyclist and racer first. He fortunately had the skill to translate his experience into metal, and he created a form that influenced everything that followed. Cino Cinelli had the intuitive knowledge and practical experience of what worked well, and what helped maximize performance while maintaining comfort.

Maybe these frames are not right for everyone. Certainly all riders are unique, and we all have our preferences. But for those of us who fit this bike, Cino got it right."

Lack of holes in lugs, old-style Special Corsa decal on seat tube, fender eyelets, and no derailleur cable guides on top of bottom bracket suggests this bike is pre-1970, likely late 60s.

1950s Cinelli at L'Eroica

"While sitting outside our van at Eroica, waiting for the night to come, sipping our cold beer, we suddenly had this apparition. An elegant man riding a really old Cinelli just came across and disappeared in the parking lot, we stood there like four garden dwarfs for a while. Then the man came back and stopped right in front of us. In two seconds we were all around him jumping and screaming like a bunch of school girls.

As many of the Eroica participants he was more than happy to tell us something about his ride, on the other side we were so euphoric that we forgot to ask his name. Very impolite. Anyway he was looking for somebody he couldn’t find so he spent ten minutes recalling the story of this bike.

The frame was built for his cousin in the early 50′s, considering that Cino Cinelli started his business as a frame builder in 1948 this must be one of the first bikes produced. At that time Cinelli was an exclusive brand, it was the brand for the rich people, the top rated bike around. The guy omitted the way his cousin became rich during the war and was a little upset because he had to wait until his cousin death to ride this jewel.

Some clues could help us dating the frame. First the seatstay are in a “traditional” position, as all of us know Cinelli lately redesigned the seat collar, bring the seatstays in behind the lug rather that along side it, but this modification was brought around the 1953 apparently.

Second clue is the rear derailleur. Is a very rare Cambio Paris Roubaix produced by Campagnolo from the 1950 to the 1955. This derailleur was extremely innovative since it allows the rider to change gear by using only one lever, instead of the two normally used those days (one for moving the chain one one for release the wheel). We were astonished by the way this derailleurs works, but the guy with peacefulness in his eyes told us that during the day he had no problem shifting the gear more than 20 times over a 40 km tour. Only 20 times in the hills surrounding Gaiole in Chianti? This man came from another, and better, conception of cycling."

After the first experience in Uganda, BOOTLEG starts a new Africa adventure to test the "Racing Rats" along the world’s longest bicycle race: The Tour d’Afrique, an 11,693 km bicycle expedition and race from Cairo to Cape Town.

Peter writes, "I just found your email address while I was trying to find information on my Cinelli CMX-1 bmx bike I rode when I was a kid. I couldn't find much info on it and I was hoping you might be able to help me or even refer me to someone that might know more about these bikes. This bike was given to me as a gift in the early to mid 80's when I was just a kid. I used to ride my bike every day and collected quite a few bikes. I remember constantly being in the basement working on them with my father and using any money I had to buy new parts at our local bike shop. As I got older I put the bikes away and moved on to cars and motorcycles to play with. In any event, I was just cleaning out my basement and had to move my cinelli along with a hutch that I had. Every time I pick up that cinelli I'm amazed at how light it is - it seems like it ways nothing. Cinelli Carbon Disc Wheel

Photos of a Cinelli carbon disc wheel currently on ebay. These wheels date to the 1980s. While I'm not familiar with the history of them the seller writes, "Very hard to find Cinelli Laser Carbon Fiber front wheel for Cinelli Laser. The first Carbon Fibre wheel in the history of cycling. This is a part of the big history of the Cinelli Laser." Over at the Italian Cycling Journal there is reference to Rossin having pioneered the carbon disc wheel in 1983 (see here). So, who was first?

Cinelli Pista

Tom writes in, "Picked this up off a mate who works as a removalist, he was pretty much given the bike and I bought it off him. Came with steel 650b rims laced to a rear record hub and front first gen dura ace, got rid of them pretty quickly and replaced with 32/40 record(pre stamped) laced to gold fiamme rims.

Just waiting on the new rear sprocket, some rubber and a replacement head tube badge.

Other parts are:
cinelli #1 stem/#14 bars
first gen record pista cranks/bb
25 tooth campagnolo chainring
record headset
the coventry chain
unicator saddle
christophe cages
zeus pedals

Not sure if I want to sell it or do a full restoration.

It's mid 60's is as far as I know from the hubs that were on it.

Distinguishing a Cinelli from a Windsor, a Photographic Comparison

My thanks to Cinelli Only reader Steve F. who wrote in with, "A while back I was faced with an unpainted frame that looked very much like a Cinelli. At that point I had never heard of a Windsor but soon learned how easy it is to get fooled by the Mexican "Cinelli". It became clear that a database where one could compare the two makes would be very beneficial. Fast forward a few years and I now own both a Cinelli Speciale Corsa and a Windsor Professional. So I present to the Cinelli Only community a visual primer, or bike spotter’s guide, to the main differences between the two bikes. One caveat, the Cinelli, black bike, is a repaint whereas the Windsor is original. Lastly the bikes are both 58 centimeters and are circa 1970."

To add to Steve's comments, there have been also been more than several Windors that have been repainted and decaled as Cinellis and sold to an unsuspecting buyer. Note also that a Windsor will use a 27.2 seatpost whereas a Cinelli will use a 26.2 seatpost. Why? Read Serafino Tomi's interview here to find out.

This particular frameset is currently on ebay with this description:

"A little Cinelli history: In the late 1980's, early 90's Cinelli produced their cult classic: the Cinelli Laser, during that same time they also produced the Cinelli Cinetica. This exact frame (see pics) that I am selling: the Cinelli Cinetica was manufactured very briefly because the technology at that time was prohibitively expensive when working with carbon fiber monocoque one piece frames and forks. The Cinelli Laser at that time was all steel and did an excellent job mimicking the gentle slopes and fillets of carbon fiber in a steel frame, with carbon fiber that is all natural in the manufacturing process. The Cinelli Cinetica was way ahead of it's time and only a small batch of them were ever produced in the entire world

What I have here is one of the rarest racing frames ever manufactured: The Cinelli Cinetica carbon frame and fork. The frame serial number is 0016, it's the 16th frame made.

This is the last frame of it's kind, even rarer than the Cinelli Laser. What makes this frame special is that it is BRAND NEW. This frame has never been assembled, it is factory new, zero miles, been packaged up for 21 years. The fork is also brand new, uncut.

This is a true carbon fiber monocoque built racing frame. Hand made in Italy with the expertise and cooperation of 3 world class companies:

Cinelli

Campagnolo

Ferrari

This is the frame that started it all. The Italians had carbon fiber perfected way before anyone else

Here is a brief background on this rare frame: In the late 1980's Andrea Cinelli decided to manufacture the ultimate racing frame. Along with Ferrari and Campagnolo the design was perfected and production went into effect. All the Cinetica frames used Campagnolo dropouts stamped: Cinetica. As for the authentic Ferrari red paint, that was provided by Ferrari along with its special carbon fiber formula one race car blend.

You will not find much info on the internet about Cinetica, if you google it you will find a few pics which by the way are mine since I have owned multiple Cinelli Cineticas...this one is special because it is 100% new.

Why is this frame so rare, it started it all...while everybody was messing with aluminum and steel, Cinelli had a vision to use carbon fiber. Cinetica was 20 years ahead of its time.

OK, here are the frame specs:

Size: 55cm (center to top)
Top tube length: 54cm (center to center)
headset: 1" threaded (fork is 100% new, uncut).
Bottom Bracket threading: Italian
Seatpost diameter: 27.2mm (seatpost not included)
Front derailleur: braze-on

Condition: BRAND NEW, zero miles, never assembled.

Cinelli Super Corsa 1977

Andy writes in about his 1977 SC, "Here are two photos of my ’77 SC. It was bought new by my uncle in ’77, ridden daily, and refinished in the late 80’s. I updated the drive train and brakes to Campy 8-speed Record when he gave me the frame about 2 years ago. It’s a 63.5 cm seat tube, and 59cm top tube. The ride is smooth compared to modern aluminum frames! It’s a great weekend bike for me. Thanks again for the great site!"

Wow, 1A Stem AND Cinelli Classic Handlebars Returning

We knew that the 1A stem was being reintroduced but now we learn that the Giro D’Italia ’64 bar shaped exactly like the original with a 75mm reach and 140mm drop is also being reintroduced. And, there is more: the 1965 Criterium handlebar is also being reintroduced.

The 1A stem will be available in lengths from 90mm to 130mm.

The stem will supposedly be 26.0 to accommodate the new bars.

Note the only significant flaw is the minor defects on either side of the stem/headset interface from the bars flopping excessively side to side. Please see the stem photos.

Limited to 300 Lasers were produced, and all were custom. In 1984, the UCI decreed that aerodynamic modifications were not allowed, that is wheel covers, etc., and that aero features must be an integral part of the bicycle design and function.
Cinelli was the first manufacturer to incorporate the "Aero" concept into a production bike and the result was the Laser.

This 1984 Cinelli Laser Evolution was custom made by hand by Andrea Pesenti, designed by Antonio Colombo, and engineered by Paolo Erzegovesi for Lothar Thoms who is considered to be the greatest track kilo time trialist ever. In addition to his world and Olympic titles, his Olympic victory in 1980 was achieved in a time of 1:02.955, which through 1990 stood as the fastest time ever recorded. His victory margin in that stunning performance was almost two seconds – the most dominant victory ever in the Olympics. In addition to his Olympic gold medal, he won the World Kilometer Time Trial Championship four times between 1977 and 1981. After handily winning gold in the 1980 Olympics, which the US boycotted over the Soviet invasion of Afganistan, Lothar Thoms (GDR) had his sights set on the 1984 Olympics to be held in LA. It was not to be as the entire eastern bloc boycotted and the East German Kilo specialist and his custom Cinelli stayed home. The bike he had Cinelli build for the Olympics was quite special. Build of Columbus MS (multi-shape) tubing, the Laser embodies a synergistic integration of design and engineering into a work of art. This bike was professionally restored in 2003. Laser ~ Multi-shaped tube sections, webbed joints (no plastic filler in this one) the extended aero fin beneath the bottom bracket, sloping top tube and no-headset. The handlebars, fork and frame are integrated by a dual set of roller and needle bearings that engage into the head tube when the stem is tightened. Cinelli Laser Track Frames were limited to 300, and released in the 1980s. Each original model was built by hand by Andrea Pesenti, designed by Antonio Colombo, and engineered by Paolo Erzegovesi.

In 1948, a good professional racer with 15 years pedaling experience in the legs and the geniality in mechanics, decides to make use of his brilliant intuitions developed during the many miles run on every type of road surface, it’s Cino Cinelli. Some may remember him for his cycling career, many for his great gifts given to cycling, the modern handlebar, the first saddle with a plastic frame, the first foot clips, the first quick release pedals.
30 years later, in 1978, Cino handed the company over to a young entrepreneur in the steel tube industry with the bicycle at heart: Antonio Colombo.
His interpretation is different, perhaps more visionary, the eye sees beyond the present. So the company is transformed and the inventions of the “design made in Cinelli” begin to get known all over the world. The bicycle changes, or better, the vision of the bike changes. The bike is seen as total project. Laser is born, the lugs are abandoned and TIG welding is introduced in the frame. Furthermore it is the only Italian bicycle to win a Compasso d'Oro (1991) besides more than 28 gold medals in various Olympic games and World Championships. Competition is always in the Cinelli’s DNA. Its handlebars are chosen by Champions such as Lemond, Fignon, Hinault and Chiappucci, without forgetting Lance Armstrong and Mario Cipollini and also Di Luca, Freire and Simoni. Cinelli’s Rampichino (1985) introduce MTB in Italy, Cork Ribbon (1987) reinvents the bicycle ribbon, Spinaci extensions (1996) are used by over 800,000 cyclists, Bootleg (2000) challenges the rules and reinvents the concept of street cycling, Ram (2002) revolutions the handlebars. These are the roots of Cinelli, this is its present: today Cinelli is mentioned in the Dictionary of Italian Design (Rizzoli, 1999), in the ADI Design Index (2000-2001), and the Corriere della Sera newspaper calls it a cult object in the USA like Ferrari, Vespa, Lavazza or Fornasetti (9th January 1999).

Since 1997 Cinelli is a division of Gruppo Srl and together with Colombus forms a world recognized production pole in the top level cycling industry. Cinelli Super Corsa

Jerry, the owner, writes, "The original color was yellow with chromed lugs. I've had the frame repaired as the downtube was slightly damaged, and I had it repainted in the Brugelmann colors. Cyclart did all the work. I know it was not the best choice for value but I love the look of the red detail on the yellow lugs. I have the old Cinelli M71 petals on it and I just love it. The serial number is #1838."

"CINELLI LASER ROAD TIME TRIAL BIKE

I purchased this bike in Milan, Italy in May of 1986 at the Cinelli factory showroom. Several measurements were taken, and options discussed thru an interpretor.

Purchase price was 4,000,000.00 Lira plus freight and VAT.

I had previously seen the Track version at the '84 Olympic games at the Velodrome in LA. and I knew I had to get one for myself.

In 1984, the UCI decreed that aerodynamic modifications were not allowed, ie wheel covers, etc., and that aero features must be an integral part of the bicycle design and function.

Cinelli was the first manufacturer to incorporate the "Aero" concept into a production bike and the result was the Laser. Cinelli utilized the sloping top tube, 26" front wheel, ovalized frame joints, bullhorn bars, carbon fiber wheels, and several other design elements to increase aerodynamic efficiency. These core design elements are still used by most of the top aero manufacturers, except that carbon fiber is now the material of choice for the frame and several key components that give dramatic gains in total weight vs. the steel version.

The Laser was the Formula One of bicycles in the mid-eighties and retains a "cool" factor that very few bikes will attain. Just Google the Laser for more history.

My Laser was raced in several State Championships as well as in the Senior Nationals. It was never wrecked or abused. It has been in air conditioned storage it's whole life.

Angelo Caccia Returns to Gruppo Srl

Angelo Caccia (former commercial director at Campagnolo, right in photo) joined the Board of Directors as Vice President of Gruppo Srl. His name was already linked with this Italian company a long time ago. Between 1982 and 1990, Angelo Caccia was one of the protagonists of the golden period of steel and the legendary SLX tubeset. Recently he returned to Gruppo after 20 years and bringing a lot of experience from Italy’s leading bicycle component manufacturer, Caccia confirms to be “proud to return to a team led by the same management as that which represented the ambitious vanguard of the industry in the 80s.”

Caccia’s goal will be to ensure the continuous growth of the market segments in which the brand has maintained leadership and to take advantage of the magical moment of the new steel bike boom. He will coordinate all commercial strategies and the development of new business. His return marks years of restructuring and consolidation at Gruppo Srl.

Antonio Colombo, founder and president of Gruppo, stated: “This is a historical reunion, Colombo, Erzegovesi and Caccia, as if 3 of Beatles reformed to play together again. I expect big things, today we are world leaders of the fixed gear movement, as well as more traditional market segments. Everywhere I look I see an extremely strong interest in Cinelli, Columbus and Bootleg. I’m sure that Angelo Caccia’s experience we will soon result in our brands merits.”

How Lucky Can You Be?

A reader, lets call him Mr. X, wrote in with this:

"My name is X. As soon as it is warm enough up here I start to commute. It was -7C on Tuesday and that was warm enough. Anyway, my neighbor is always shaking his head because of my bicycling, but it really paid off. He was dropping stuff off at a good will place and noticed an old 10 speed sitting there and picked it up for me. When I came home from work and saw this old bike on his walkway I thought, "Great a 1970's 10 speed, just what I need." Before I was off my bike he was calling me to see if I could find a home for this bike. Not wanting to hurt any feelings I said sure I will find a place. As I walked up to it I noticed it had quick release hubs. The front wheel was off the bike so I grabbed the top bar and lifted it up which made the shift levers about eye level and noticed the embossing. I started to realize this may not be just your average bike so I googled it and guess what. I think I have a 1971 Speciale Corsa. I am sending you some pictures and asking your help in dating it. I have the wheel in at the bike shop being trued and tired. You will notice that there is no chain. I was wondering if you knew how many links were used on these bikes."

A reader from Amsterdam writes about his Cinetica "Giotto" (see original brochure and other photos here) in Amsterdam. He writes:

"It was a nice surprised to find the Cinetica Giotto on your site. In 1989, I bought my Giotto in Amsterdam and even though in the meantime I have had many different bikes, I never could sell this one, so it is still in my possession. My serial number is 20.

Up till now I have only once spotted another one in Holland. In Italy, where I lived in 2003 and 2004 I have never seen one nor during the years I rode Gran Fondo's in Italy.

One year ago I decided it was a shame to have such a beautiful bike hanging in the garage and never use it, that I transformed it to a city bike. As I am riding it more frequently now, a lot of people tell me they have never seen a nicer bike than this Giotto, so I am still very happy with it. I only have little problems with the paint job, since one year the bike has a little
osmosis. Beside this bike I have 3 other racing bikes, including a Pinarello and an Italian custom titanium bike.

Please find herewith a recent picture of the Cinetica Giotto made over!"

The origin of GINO on the frame? "I bought the bike in Amsterdam at a bike shop named Cycles Gino (Bartali). After two years the owner of the shop asked me if he could put my bike on display during winter time and use it for exhibitions. He wanted to put some stickers on the bike with the name of his shop and offered me a set of wheels in return, which I did and I never took them off, so that is the story after."

Cinelli Fan: Dario Pegoretti

In the words of Dario Pegoretti as told to Lodovico Pignatti of Cinelli:

"When I first met Cino, he made the immediate impression, as one sometimes does, of being a man of other times. I was just a junior rider at the time, this was in around 1972, and I was riding with the Unione Sportiva Aurola Trento and I showed some amount of promise so they decided to get me a new race bike that year; a Cinelli. Back then I had a Legnano, a good bike but already, in those days, a little below a Cinelli. So Vittorio Brocaldo, the director of the association, took me by car from Trento to the old Cinelli headquarters at Via dei Folli, Milano to get fitted.

Now the first thing I remember noticing walking in was the mountains and mountains of handlebars all intertwined amongst each other; the business of course, then, being focused on handlebars, stems and saddles. Of course I was very nervous, Cino was there to take my measurements, an imposing figure, very smartly dressed, seemingly half Milanese half English gentlemen with a calm authority; nervous because at that time for cyclists going into via dei Folli was like going on a pilgrimage to see the Madonna; a Cinelli, was, in those days, the most expensive and desirable bicycle available, along with Masi, with a little behind them Colnago, who was still just beginning to come to prominence.

I remember then there was the very great rivalry between Faliero Masi and Cino Cinelli; two very different, very personal styles of building that made a very strong impression compared to other frames of the time; Cinelli you could already have described as a little old fashioned, with his classic round tubes, distinctive fast back seat-stays, three-point lugs, heraldic font and crest, while Masi more modern with his lower ovalised chain stays, pressed tube shapes and seat collar arrangement.

Back then you had what you called “Le Tre C” (the three Cs): Columbus, Cinelli and Clement; that was apex of professional cycling, the finest build money could buy, as well as of course the campagnolo gruppo. When my bicycle arrived, grey paint and red decals with black outlines, it was built up in this classic style, but that is not what I remember most, what I have never forgotten is the distinctive smell of the factory; the indescribable smell of some kind of special oil; my bike, when it arrived in Trento, had this same indescribable smell and to this day, for the life of me, I have never found the smell anywhere else.

A few years later, after growing a couple more centimetres, I sold my bike to a famous Italian Olympic figure skater who used to ride as training in the summers and went to see a young frame builder from my parts who was had developed a good reputation: a certain Mario Confente, still in his 20s, working in Montorio, this before he had gone to the States to build for Masi and made his legend. I had him build me a new frame in his already distinctive style, but that is a whole other story…"

"The Story of the Giro d'Italia": Preface and Excerpt

While working on our history of the Tour de France, I was struck by dearth of information available in English about the second most important race in the world, the Giro d’Italia. I say second most important, but I hope after reading this history the reader may come to hold the same opinion I have, that today it is the world’s finest race. The Giro ranks above all others not because it has a superior peloton or more fans or a longer history or greater prestige or more prize money. The Tour de France easily wins on all of those counts. But this is about sports, and sports are about competition, and there the Giro wins, hands down.

First of all, the Giro takes place in Italy, blessed as almost no other place on Earth with beautiful cities, rugged mountains and people insanely passionate about sports. Here, bicycle racing matters, and matters a lot. The riders know they are competing under the hot light of fiery love of the sport.

The Giro is raced in the spring, when sudden storms can come out of nowhere. In the mountains, this means abundant sunshine can quickly turn to intolerable cold, fog, rain, snow and ice. Some of the Giro’s greatest dramas took place while Mother Nature raged at the helpless cyclists. Only eight riders finished the 1914 Giro, a testimony to that edition’s difficulty. Other years have seen mass abandonments when the majority of the racers could no longer endure the dantesque conditions the race imposed. These episodes of terrible suffering, from which great champions have forged victories, are far more common in the Giro than in the Tour. Between baking Sicilian heat, near vertical Dolomite ascents, freezing snowstorms and blinding torrents of rain, the Giro has put its riders in extremis more often than the other Grand Tours.

While it wasn’t always true, today the quality of the Giro’s racing is superior. I believe that the Tour de France’s racing is often dull and negative compared to that of the Giro. It may well be that the Tour is so important, the riders race it not to win, but to not lose. With its days of slow, piano racing mostly a thing of the past, the Giro can be a bare-knuckle brawl from start to finish. There has been no race in recent memory to rival the 2009 Giro, with its down-to-the-wire slugfest between winner Denis Menchov and Danilo Di Luca. The last time the Tour had such a fracas was probably the 1989 duel between Laurent Fignon and Greg LeMond.

Today the Giro is measurably harder to race than the Tour. With power meters attached to the riders’ bikes, we know that Giro racers go deeper and expend more energy than those competing in the Tour.

Following the footsteps of predecessor Vincenzo Torriani, current Giro boss Angelo Zomagnan creates race routes that are interesting, challenging to the riders, generally keeping the outcome in suspense until the final couple of days, leaving the sports fan excited and on the edge of his seat for three weeks.

That’s why I love the Giro d’Italia.

The great rivalry between Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali is well known, mostly because of their adventures in the Tour de France. But for much of bike racing’s history the Alps have been a high wall, and Italian sponsors preferred to keep their racers at home where they could earn valuable publicity. Because of this, there is a whole world of great athletes who are virtually unknown to the non-Italian cycling fan. How about Giovanni Valetti? In 1939 Valetti beat Bartali when Gino was at the very peak of his powers. Has anyone heard of Giuseppe Enrici, the Giro winner who was born in Pittsburgh? Alfonsina Strada was the only woman who entered (and unofficially finished) a Grand Tour. And there was Giordano Cottur, who won a Giro stage in Trieste while guns blazed.

Clearly, this is a story that has to be told.

Here is the excerpt from the 1939 Giro d'Italia, there are a few changes to the text in the book in order to make it understandable in an excerpt.

Because Gino Bartali had missed the 1938 edition where Giovanni Valetti had crushed the competition, what the tifosi wanted was a real head-to-head match-up between Italy’s two finest stage racers on their home soil. Bartali was ready and fit, having won Milan–San Remo from a six-man break that included Aldo Bini and Mario Vicini. Valetti’s impact on the races of the time is much lighter than Bartali’s but we do know from the ferocity of the racing in the 1939 Giro that Valetti came to Milan on April 28 in truly sparkling form.

There was perhaps one other rider entered who was close to the level of Bartali and Valetti that year, Vicini. But the rest, Bergamaschi, Canavesi, Del Cancia, Di Paco and Cino Cinelli (the same Cinelli who went on to bicycle industry fame), to name a few, were merely excellent professional riders. Valetti and Bartali were extraordinary, the likes of whom turn otherwise superb riders into also-rans and mentions in Giro histories.

The nineteen-stage, 3,006-kilometer schedule took the riders no further south than Rome. It was really a Giro d’(Northern) Italia.

1935 winner Vasco Bergamaschi took the first stage win in Turin but the second stage into Genoa had the race’s first real ordering of the General Classification. When Bartali, Cinelli and Vicini finished in Genoa in that order, they were a minute ahead of the next rider, Del Cancia, and a full five and a half minutes ahead of the main peloton containing Valetti.

Gino Bartali was in pink.

The next day Bartali missed the break—part of his pattern of regularly being on the wrong side of peloton fractures—and finished seven minutes behind the ten-man winning group that just happened to contain Valetti. The only Legnano (Bartali’s team) rider in the escape was Secondo Magni. The break contained riders from Frejus, Bianchi, Lygie, Ganna, Gloria, La Voce di Mantova and Il Littoriale. All the major teams except Olympia and the Belgians had at least one of their men in the break. It was a perfect assembly of riders, several of whom were team leaders, to wreak maximum destruction on the hopes of the 25-year-old Bartali.

Cinelli was now the leader with Vicini in second place at the same time. Valetti was eighth, 5 minutes 33 seconds behind and Bartali was ninth, at 7 minutes 2 seconds.

Stage six, a short 85-kilometer half stage before the afternoon’s time trial, had a surprising finish. Carmine Saponetti, an independent rider placed in the “Voce di Mantova” group, won the stage from a three-man break, aided by Bianchi team leader Adolfo Leoni who had let himself come in second.

Why did the Bianchi captain gift the stage win to Saponetti? Saponetti was broke. He started the Giro with 40 lire in his pocket and hoped to earn a little cash as the race progressed. His mother was so concerned that she came to his hotel room in Rome where the fifth stage ended with 100 lire for the impoverished, unsponsored Saponetti. The generous Leoni let the poor farmer’s son pocket some desperately needed money by letting him triumph at the finish in Rieti.

Except for Vicini’s loss of three minutes in stage five, the standings hadn’t changed before the stage seven timed hill-climb to Terminillo. Valetti won it, besting Bartali by 28 seconds and Cinelli by more than 2 minutes.

That gave the following General Classification:

1. Cino Cinelli

3. Settimo Simonini @ 3 minutes 27 seconds

4. Giovanni Valetti @ 3 minutes 29 seconds

5. Mario Vicini @ 4 minutes

8. Gino Bartali @ 5 minutes 19 seconds

The race headed north, up the Adriatic coast with a detour deep into Bartali’s Tuscany. Cinelli lost enough time because of a collision with a motorcycle in stage ten to lose the lead. Stage eleven took the riders on a trip over the Apennines with an ascent of the Passo del Muraglione. Bartali was first across the line in Florence with Cinelli second and Valetti still further back, but with the same time. Valetti took over the maglia rosa as the race got a bit tighter.

The General Classification now stood thus:

1. Giovanni Valetti

2. Cino Cinelli @ 11 seconds

3. Mario Vicini @ 31 seconds

4. Adolfo Leoni @ 1 minute 26 seconds

5. Severino Canavesi @ 1 minute 39 seconds

6. Gino Bartali @ 1 minute 50 seconds

The year’s second time trial (counting the Terminillo hill climb) was held in Trieste. Valetti proved he deserved the leadership by beating all in the 42-kilometer test. Vicini lost 1 minute 46 seconds and Bartali gave up over two minutes. Valetti now held a lead over Bartali that was a single second short of four minutes.

Stage sixteen signaled the Giro’s arrival in the Dolomites with a scaling of the Passo della Mauria before the finish down the valley in Cortina d’Ampezzo. Bartali couldn’t drop the Piedmontese rider and once again they finished with the same time.

Stage seventeen was 258 kilometers going from Cortina d’Ampezzo to Trent with the Passo Rolle the principle obstacle. Bartali knew he was running out of race. He was first over the Rolle and, after joining up with Vicini and several other riders, had finally managed to drop the seemingly tireless Valetti. Valetti was put into crisis by Bartali’s attack, relinquishing 7 minutes 48 seconds. Gino Bartali was the new leader with Vicini second at 58 seconds. The race seemed hopelessly lost to Valetti, fourth at 3 minutes 49 seconds with only two stages to go.

The Italian cycling world was insane with excitement over the duel between these two riders with most experts considering the race a done deal at this point. The two-time Giro and 1938 Tour winner was riding in a commanding fashion with a lead that should allow him to arrive in Milan in pink.

But this was a battle between two great champions and neither one was going to give up. The penultimate day was the last one in the high mountains. It was a 166-kilometer race from Trent to Sondrio with the Tonale and Aprica passes providing Valetti a last chance to salvage his Giro. Reports of exactly what happened that day differ widely, but here’s my understanding of the stage.

Valetti attacked early, but Bartali was able to bridge up to him, bringing along Valetti’s teammate Olimpio Bizzi. Valetti then flatted and Bizzi gave Valetti his wheel, but Bartali hadn’t waited around, he was gone.

Bartali was able to get over the Tonale first, a good five minutes ahead of Valetti but it did him no good. Bizzi had rejoined Valetti and the two of them left Bartali behind when he flatted. Valetti made good his escape at Aprica, winning the stage in terrible, freezing weather (the Tonale pass had 20 centimeters of snow). To paraphrase American racer Floyd Landis, Bartali chose a bad day to have a bad day. While Valetti was working with a will to perform a miracle, a desperate Bartali flatted yet again and then crashed. Worse for him, his team car was delayed and slow to get him a new wheel. Valetti came into the finish in Sondrio over five minutes ahead of the first chaser (teammate Bizzi) and almost seven minutes ahead of Bartali and Vicini.

But there’s more to this day than just some hard racing and rotten luck. The Frejus (Valetti’s team) car was ahead of Bartali’s Legnano team service car on the road. To prevent the Legnano car from moving up to help Bartali, the Frejus driver pretended to lose control in the snow, ending up stopped with his car sideways in the middle of the road. The Legnano car was blocked while Bartali was trying to change a sew-up tire in the freezing weather. Valetti then flatted, and when the mechanic arrived, he purposely wrecked Valetti’s wheel so that he could show the judges that the wheel needed a replacement rather than a time consuming tire change.

Valetti was back in pink with Bartali almost three minutes behind in second place.

Bartali escaped on the Ghisallo climb in the final run-in to Milan but Valetti and the rest of the field weren’t letting him get away. The pack pulled him back, but the relentless Bartali still won the final stage. Small consolation for second place overall.

Historian Leo Turrini has written that there might have been something a bit hinky about the 1939 Giro. Valetti was a member of the Young Fascists but Bartali had declined to join them. He was instead, a member of Catholic Action, a lay organization that had an uneasy, competitive relationship with the government. Was there something strange about that day in the snow that cost Bartali so dearly or was it just bad luck meeting an on-form Valetti? Turrini writes that Mussolini’s domestic espionage agency OVRA left a document that leads one to believe there might have been some sort of government involvement in that snowy stage eighteen. Seventy years later, everyone involved is dead. We’ll probably never know.

Now both men had two Giro victories, but Valetti never did anything great in cycling again. One writer called him a bright meteor that blazed briefly across the cycling sky. It’s an admirable legacy, two Giri and a Tour of Switzerland. Valetti tried to come back after the war, but his time had passed.

On June 4, a couple of weeks after the Giro concluded, 20-year-old Fausto Coppi, in the words of Philippe Brunel, “arrived on the scene and scrambled Bartali’s orderly life” by breaking away from the pack in the Tour of Piedmont. He was caught after his chain began slipping and finished third behind the day’s winner, Bartali. That evening Legnano team boss Pavesi signed Coppi to be a gregario for Bartali.

Cinelli Titanium Hubset ?

These hubs were on ebay labeled as rare "Cinelli Titanium Hubset" (for Campagnolo, 32 spokes; Titanium body, freehub...Aluminum flanges, axles).

Is anyone familiar these? Cinelli or something else with Cinelli decals?

UPDATE: Thanks to Brant for leaving a comment saying that he thought they were early Hope hubs. Some searching verifies that, this from a 1996 catalog, "Hope Ti hub":

Cinelli Urban Shoes

ok, I admit it. I'm old and a retro-grouch. Therefore, I'm not sure what to make of Cinelli's latest product: urban shoes. To wit:

CALEPPIO DI SETTALA, Italy – Many life style magazines already hyped them before Cinelli officialy launched their new products range: dedicated urban cycling shoes. Cinelli has worked together with prestigious skateboard and shoe company DVS on a series of urban cycling shoes.

The shoe is called “Luster” and the Cinelli interpretation will come in two different models, one inspired by the Vigorelli and one by Best Of Italo ’79. For the production of these shoes Cinelli has licensed the brand name and attendant logos to DVS, and the Italians guarantee a personal pre-production approvement of all customized facing material.

The distribution of the shoes will be handled entirely by DVS. Cinelli will not sell or stock the shoes but only provide support for marketing and communication. The shoes will be available by next July in the US and in August for the rest of the world.

“This cooperation is a fantastic example of the further expansion of the Cinelli brand into new and emerging areas”, says Fabrizio Aghito of Cinelli. “The shoes will not only be stocked in the world’s leading fixed-gear/urban culture stores but they will also be sold in ‘streetwear’ and skateboard shops. The sale of the shoes will be accompanied by a significant online and print marketing campaign and we expect a noticeable increase in interest in hard Cinelli product from current dealers and potential dealers.”

Cinelli Proxima

Michael, from Australia, owned this Cinelli Proxima Trophy; eventually replaced with this Nuovo Super Corsa. "This Proxima Trophy was made from Columbus Thron tubing, the frame weighed 2,220g and the forks were 754g. The colour was called “Pistacchio”, and was marked on the steerer tube. Serial number was “58 097633”".

1951 Cinelli Advertisement

My sincere thanks to Gary, from England, who writes, "Researched Cinelli as a teenager racing in the early 70s. I was saving up for one but went for a Hetchins as there was a 3 months wait for a Cinelli my size.

I will will try to find the rest of the Cinelli stuff that has been stashed away for the last 30 years. This advertisement comes from the November 8, 1951 pullout supplement from the Earls Court cycle show."

As you can see three models were offered:

MODEL S.C. LUSSO, with Reynolds 531 tubing
MODEL B ROMA
MODEL C CORSA

There were five styles of handlebars available:
San Remo
GranFondo
Giro d'Italia
Pista
Koblet

The ad was placed by the sole importer and general distributor for the UK,

Cinelli Nuovo Super Corsa

Michael, from Australia, writes in with, "I had an early flirtation with Cinelli Proxima trophy and after a few rides, sold it (still don’t know why) but regretted it ever since.

However, after a few years, managed to latch onto the blue beauty that I now own, and will never part with.

It was NOS when I bought it and was sourced from Cicli Ferca in Lake Como. It is made from Columbus Ultra Foco and is XL in size. The frame weighs 1742g which is pretty good, and the filet brazed lines along with the lugged BB are just sweet.

The Serial No. is 01-173, so believe that it is from 2001, and was made by Losa. I believe that there are not many around which makes it even better.

It is a great bike for riding in the Adelaide Hills and gets those admiring looks from everywhere."

My thanks to Russell, from Australia, for writing in with, "Please see attached pictures of a recently completed bike restoration, a 1979 or 1980 CMX.1 plus period brochures for this short lived Cinelli project. I have got a pair of Nisi 20" tubular rims and knobby tyres just like in the brochure but for now, my 7 year old is proud to ride a Cinelli just like his Dad."
